Zeus, the story goes, released two eagles from opposite edges of the world; they met above a ledge on Mount Parnassus, and the Greeks set a carved stone there to mark the navel of the earth. That stone, the omphalos, survives in Roman copy inside the archaeological museum.
Around it grew the Sanctuary of Apollo, terraced into a slope some 550 metres above the Gulf of Corinth in Fokida, where for close to a thousand years the priestess known as the Pythia answered questions put by farmers, tyrants and generals alike. Delphi mattered because everyone agreed it did. The sanctuary functioned as neutral ground for a fractious Greek world: rival city-states built treasuries along the Sacred Way, small marble buildings whose purpose was to display wealth won from one another. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1987, citing precisely this — the marriage of a sacred landscape to a Panhellenic institution. The architecture rewards slow reading. Six columns of the fourth-century Temple of Apollo stand re-erected on foundations laid over two earlier temples. Above it, the theatre seats around 5,000 and looks out over olive terraces falling toward Itea; higher again, the stadium held perhaps 6,500 spectators for the Pythian Games. Below the main site, at Athena Pronaia, the circular tholos of about 380 BCE keeps three of its twenty Doric columns.
The museum holds what the site lost. The bronze Charioteer, cast around 474 BCE, retains onyx eyes and copper lashes; the Naxian Sphinx once crowned a ten-metre column; the archaic twins Kleobis and Biton stand as they were carved near 580 BCE. The Greeks called the place Δελφοί, and the name still marks the modern village of stone houses stacked below the ruins.
