The ancient world placed the centre of the earth at Delphi, and marked the spot with a carved stone, the omphalos, now displayed in the site museum. Zeus, the story ran, released two eagles from opposite ends of the world; they met above Mount Parnassus.
From the eighth century BC until Theodosius closed the sanctuary in AD 393, city-states and kings climbed the Sacred Way to consult the Pythia, the priestess who answered for Apollo. A day trip from Athens to Delphi and Meteora still follows that ancient geography: 180 kilometres of highway north-west, olive terraces, and a long climb toward Parnassus.
What survives is less a ruin field than a stacked amphitheatre of stone. The Temple of Apollo holds six re-erected columns on a fourth-century BC foundation. Above it the theatre seats 5,000 and looks down the ravine toward the Gulf of Corinth; higher still, the stadium held 6,500 spectators for the Pythian Games. Below the road, the Tholos at the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia keeps three of its twenty circular columns upright. The museum, entered from the same gate, holds the sanctuary's portable wealth. Its galleries are arranged chronologically, from Mycenaean votives to Roman portraiture. The bronze Charioteer of 470 BC still grips his reins, onyx eyes intact. The twin kouroi of Kleobis and Biton stand nearby, and the Sphinx of Naxos once crowned a ten-metre column. The Siphnian Treasury frieze shows gods choosing sides against the giants, carved around 525 BC. UNESCO inscribed the sanctuary and its museum in 1987.
Meteora answers Delphi with a different vertical logic. Sandstone pillars rise up to 400 metres above the Thessalian plain near Kalambaka, and hermits occupied their crevices from the eleventh century. Six of the twenty-four Byzantine monasteries remain active, reached now by stairs cut into the rock rather than by rope net and windlass. The two lie roughly 240 kilometres apart, which is why day trip from Athens to Delphi and Meteora tours are sold here as separate departures — one south-west through Arachova toward Parnassus, one north to the monasteries.
